Europe’s biggest cloud provider OVHcloud, has launched a platform as a service (PaaS) offering with web hoster Platform.sh.
The product is aimed at Web developers and intended to support applications and websites with data hosted entirely in Europe. This will help customers meet the requirements of Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), says OVHcloud.
Both OVHcloud and Platform are members of the European Gaia-X initiative which aims to provide a European cloud alternative.
The pairing will allow developers to focus on coding, while OVHcloud manages the infrastructure, adding and changing virtual CPUs through the OVHcloud control panel. Platform.sh technology supports web platforms such as Drupal, Magento, WordPress, and Symfony; it can be used to deploy components written in PHP, Node.js, Python, Go, Rust, .Net, or Java.
There are three levels: Start offers freelancers a one-user license, while Develop allows three to five licenses, and Expand supports 10 licenses or more.
“We are proud to announce this partnership with Platform.sh,” said Michel Paulin, CEO of OVHcloud. “Data control continues to be a concern for users, and we would like to support the changing needs in PaaS with trusted solutions, without compromising on performance.
“We are very excited about this partnership with OVHcloud, firstly because together we’ve built an ambitious, elegant and easy-to-use product,” said Frédéric Plais, CEO of Platform.sh. “It required a year of collaboration between our teams to design and integrate this common solution, aimed at meeting the needs of the web developer community, who are committed to automation, quality, and economic efficiency. Secondly, the PaaS web hosting plan will enable European startups to expand quickly, allowing them to focus on their core products rather than infrastructure management. And finally, because we share our convictions on the importance of offering Europeans a product made in Europe by European companies, providing all the necessary guarantees on compliance with European data and laws,”
Platform.sh is already available in Europe, the US, and Asia, running on AWS, Azure, and now OVHcloud.
OVHcloud’s announcement says the deal will combine “the robustness of OVHcloud infrastructure with the flexibility of Platform.sh technology”, although OVHcloud’s reputation for reliability took a severe hit earlier this year, when one of its data centers in Strasbourg burnt down, causing irreparable to a second facility on the site and the loss of customer data.
